Interesting Turn of Events? Update on Doctor Visits.

I guess sometimes it pays to get a second medical opinion!

Were you praying my cancer would be gone, vamoosed, disappeared? Well . . . Read on!

On Monday I had two more Doctor visits here at MD Anderson. Dr. Chun, the Proton Radiologist, came into the room, booted up my charts, and said, “I’ve gone over your reports several times, and I don’t see where they say you have cancer.” Interesting to say the least.

Then we excitedly drove over to another building to see Dr. Ajani, an oncologist specializing in esophageal cancer. He went through the PET scan with me to show a lump extending out a bit into my esophagus and some pinkish tissue which could indicate the presence of cancer. But he also said, “I don’t see anywhere on your pathology where cancer shows up.”

Those two doctors verified what my Thoracic Surgeon, Dr. Mehran,  said, “I don’t see any cancer in your report, and now we’ve received the pathology slides from Seattle and we don’t see cancer on those either.”

Wow! Will we still get to head for home sooner rather than later?

But, not so fast . . .

Because it’s unclear if cancer lurks in my throat area or is totally gone, the Docs here in Texas want to verify either the diagnosis from my last biopsy – that cancer has recurred — or give me a clearance to head back to Oregon cancer free.

So this Friday I run back into the procedure room for another endoscopy and biopsy of the throat area. (Why walk, it might be good news!) Those cells taken in the procedure will again head for lab analysis, and next week Tuesday or Wednesday I should get the BIG, and may I say, MUCH ANTICIPATED answer!

At any rate we’re in good spirits as you can imagine, and patiently waiting while the diagnostic process moves forward at a snail’s pace. (We are enjoying Houston in the meantime and the temps are in the 70’s).

We’ll post again next week after we get a definitive answer, so stay tuned. And in the meantime, thanks for your prayers, encouragement, and support!
